As someone who has shot inside Opryland hotel many times I can say that it can be a difficult place to capture a good picture. It is busy and the lighting can be a real challenge! So I was really pleasantly surprised when I got this work in from Trevor. Really turned out great and I cant wait to get these images out to the couple! Great work again Trevor!

So plain and simple we love this couple! They are so much fun! Down to earth and make you feel right at home! There wedding is in 4 weeks and we can't wait! You might recognize them because they had an engagement shoot done a few mths back. Instead of a bridal Megan decided to have another engagement shoot! We took a nice scenic road trip from Manchester to Mt. Eagle for some pictures at Sawanee (sp?) College. Great time and great pictures!

When we were asked to shoot a wedding at a residence we envisioned your typical residential home. We couldn't have been more wrong! Dr. Thea Basler and Brent Carner found an amazing rustic cabin atop a mountain overlooking Center Hill Lake. It was nothing short of amazing. Somewhere Michael and I would love to vacation in the future. They had a very small, intimate wedding complete with a whopping 17 people total and it was perfect! These smaller weddings have so much meaning. There wasn't a dry eye in the place and the bride and groom were just glowing. The couple requested that there pictures be in black and white which was quite a switch for me. However, I really enjoyed this and I think I will start doing more black and white images in the future! Take a look at some of the pictures from this charming little wedding!

So as many of you know...Monykah is currently in training. So she is scooping up all kinds of different shoots to gain as much experience as possible behind the camera! She is good friends with a couple that is expecting a baby boy very soon. She asked me to come along and help out! So I did and my gosh was it a blast!!! I love Monykah to death anyway so shooting with her is always so much fun but this couple was just hilarious! Not to mention they had the cutest little dog ever!! I know I seem to have a habit of making friends everywhere I go but I just couldn't resist letting them know at the end of the day..."Hey! We have got to get together some time!"

So this was an awesome couple! Before the wedding Kat had her bridal shoot done and honestly...it was amazing. There was something extra special about doing it the day of the wedding. She looked stunning and when the groom joined he wanted to recreate the classic old picture of the sailor meeting his lady in the street. I think it turned out great! I also had the pleasure of shooting with associate Laura Beth and thats always a blast! She has the most amazing eye and her and I shooting together always has a great outcome!! We aren't done editing but I am posting some of my sneaks and more to come later!

So we regularly visit the Pro forum as part of our membership to Wedding Wire. While on there recently I was reading about what other photographers opinons were as to the percentage to hold back for end of year taxes. While I normally wouldn't put something like this on our blog I felt compelled to for some reason. I remember back before Michael and I were in this business. We were that couple planning there wedding and I remember thinking to myself "Why is everything SO expensive?!" Well, when we got into this business we vowed we would not charge as much as other photographers do because it was just insane. While we still agree with that to a point (The 10k packages are seriously insane!) our attitude has gradually shifted from what we originally thought. I have this conversation with people all the time and well...I read this article and I just wanted to post it...well...because its SO true!

The following is an article a wedding photographer wrote and I thought it might be a mind opener for some of the brides out there that wonder why you have to fork over so much for your pictures.. Keep in mind that our packages start out at just $600!

I’ll never forget within the first week of quitting my newspaper job (in February 2006) I was at the gym and someone asked me what I do for a living.

“I’m a wedding & portrait photographer” happily rolled off my tongue.

They perked right up and said “oh that’s a GREAT job! I bet you make a lot of money, since most weddings are like TWO-grand! And you have the weekdays off!”

Even at that point, I knew I wouldn’t be technically be pocketing that much per wedding and I knew I would be editing and marketing Monday-Friday.

But I had NO idea how the actual breakdown of a professional photographer’s fees would be.

I get a lot of inquiries asking about business tips or photography tips. I even have a workshop that allows these eager minds to pick my brain for a day.

But I wanted to set the record straight right here on my personal blog about being an artist: it isn’t glamorous (unless you become very, VERY famous).

I stick to my career because it is my passion and I can’t NOT do it. It’s how I think and everything around me inspires me to continue doing it.

With that being said, here’s a breakdown you may have never thought about.

Taxes - Remember when you were a teenager and you got your first paycheck? I do. I was getting paid around $5.10/hour and after doing the math was expecting a paycheck for a certain amount. As I opened it, I thought “what…on…earth?!” It seemed short. Very short. Looking at the bottom of the stub, it showed the breakdown of why my check was about 30 percent shorter than I anticipated. Good ol’ Uncle Sam.

When a bride & groom cut a check for their photographer, about 30 percent of that check AUTOMATICALLY isn’t the photographer’s for the keeping. It’s Uncle Sam’s.

My husband (the numbers guy) is diligent about transferring over this set percentage to a “tax savings” account. So at year-end, I have that tax money ready to hand over.

*added note: I realize that this seems like a high percentage. My husband & I agreed on his amount as a goal (not obtained 100% of the time) because we would rather have too much left over than not enough. If there is money left over, it goes into owner’s draw or towards a nice luxury overhead item at year-end.

Overhead – Being a professional photographer is DARN expensive. Beyond the normal phone, fax, computer, office supplies, website, etc. overhead, there’s membership fees, license fees, marketing, cost of prints & albums*, massive backup drives, insurance, seminars to stay on top of the latest trends, Adobe Lightroom & Photoshop software (and yearly upgrades) – I could go ON & on about this category. It’s kind of the invisible category that people tend to overlook but it allocates a whopping 30 percent of every dollar that comes my way.

*a note on COGS*: I realize that cost-of-goods-sold is another category all together, but to me it is a percentage related to money that comes in & it is money that I “spend” to do business… that’s why I have it roughly plopped it this category.

Even with a home-office & studio, my overhead is upwards of several hundred dollars a month. And this doesn’t include attending any awesome workshops or upgrading my computer. These are what I consider “luxury overhead” items and I only get to do them if I I have covered the essentials, have given myself a cushion for the next month, and make over a certain amount each month.

Equipment Savings – This is another overhead, but it’s so critical, it has it’s own category. It takes a LONG time to save for a new camera body when you stash 10 percent at a time away. Let’s put it this way: a Canon 5D Mark II (with insurance & a warranty) is approximately $3,000. That is 10 percent of $30,000. If each wedding is $2,000, that’s 15 weddings. Or, if each portrait client spends $300, that’s 100 portrait sessions.

I realize equipment is a tool, but I also don’t advocate credit card debt (even though society does)…

I personally cannot actually handle that kind of volume (alone) without outsourcing or sacrificing quality of product. (So, obviously, I need to make up for that in sales… that’s another blog post all together).

So when you hear a photographer getting a couple new big-ticket-items: camera body and nice L lens, you know they have either

a) saved for a year to do so

b) invested much more than 10 percent (borrowed funds from another “category”).

I guess there is another option there:

c) they have a sugar momma or fund their business with personal funds. (And last I checked, I think they call that a “hobby”…)

Retirement - Ya, I want to retire someday and I thank my lucky-stars that my husband is so patient with me finally realizing I need to always,always put 10 percent of each check that comes in the door into the 401K. Seriously, I can’t be hauling around 20+ pounds of gear in my senior-citizen days.

Taking retirement, college/vacation savings & the owner’s draw: money in your pocket category, that totals 30 percent. I think you’d be hard-pressed to find a corporate employee putting 1/3 of their “take home pay” into their 401k. So it does feel like a lot to save, because it is (proportionally speaking).

Savings College Fund (-or- Vacation Fund) – Maybe you don’t have a kid [yet], so you can call this your vacation fund. Either way, you will want to have a little nest-egg and 10 percent* is a nice round number to work with.

*a note on this: if you don’t have kids & don’t go on vacations, yes: this amount goes into your pocket… it is owner’s draw, but most people would love a getaway to recharge their batteries. Consider this percentage an investment in your mental health.

Owner’s Draw – Owner’s Draw means money in your pocket. It’s like you are taking cash out of the business cash drawer. This is the category people often assume is the big one. Nope. Maybe it is for your business model, but it isn’t for mine. Of course if I have a really good month, I’ll do the Happy Dance and want to spend a little extra on something my husband and I have been saving for, but in general, 10 percent is what I actually get to “pocket.”

Owner’s Draw isn’t always for fun things, however: this is also to pay our personal bills (*sigh* adult responsibilities).

So in case you haven’t been adding all this up in your head, here is the breakdown:

Taxes 30%
Overhead 30%
Equipment Savings 10%
Retirement 10%
College Fund 10%
Owner’s Draw 10%

For ease-sake, let’s drive this point home with a cut & dry example:

$2,000 for a wedding:

Taxes 30% $ 600.00
Overhead 30% $ 600.00
Equipment Savings 10% $ 200.00
Retirement 10% $ 200.00
College Fund (or Vacation Fund) 10% $ 200.00
Owner’s Draw 10% $ 200.00

Even when you lump Retirement, College Fund (or Vacation Fund) and Owner’s Draw into ONE category, that is $600 for a $2,000 wedding.

If you are doing the math and thinking, Heather: stop complaining! $600 / 8 hours of shooting = $75 per hour…. erase that concept from your mind!

There’s countless behind-the-scene hours that go into a wedding. I don’t just say that to make it sound like “so much work” goes into what I do, so I can charge more. It’s completely and totally legit. I tend to invest 60 hours of time in one wedding (start to finish: i.e. consultation, engagement portraits, travel, preparation, wedding, editing, album design, etc.). Most of that time is editing each image, but that’s my style and business model.

So, if you confirm that math $600 / 60 hours = $10 per hour.

And for every $30 dollars of that, I’m not even touching $20 (into 401K and college fund it goes…)

One more example. It’s pretty common for NEW photographers to charge for a session and images on CD. Let’s be generous and say they are charging $200:

Taxes 30% $ 60.00
Overhead 30% $ 60.00
Equipment Savings 10% $ 20.00
Retirement 10% $ 20.00
College Fund 10% $ 20.00
Owner’s Draw 10% $ 20.00

Hmmm, “pocketing” $20 for one session is kind of depressing. They probably spend 6-8 hours (maybe longer) on shooting and editing this session. For example-sake: if they spent 6 hours on it, they are making $3.33 / hour. YIKES!

So Michael and I had another engagement shoot over the weekend and while this couple originally wanted to do Cheek-wood we ended up downtown 2nd ave and then Bicentennial Mall! Another really fun couple that was a true pleasure to shoot! Photographer in training Miss Monykah was there and we are quickly realizing she is a fantastic asset to any shoot in more ways then 1! She had so many fresh ideas and well her photographs...I think those speak for themselves! Check out the sneeks below!

Tips for Formals...

I usually make it a point to bring this up durring my meetings with potential clients. I think this is one of the most important tips I could give a bride to be!

Plan Ahead and Communicate:

There is no tip more

important when it comes to these shots than to plan

ahead and communicate that plan to every single person

that is going to be in these photos. This point cannot be

stressed enough. I can’t tell you how many weddings end

up having to cut these photos short (as well as the bride

and groom photos that follow!) because of a lack of

planning ahead and needing to get over to the reception.

Start here

While you're thinking about photos you want -

make a list of who is in each shot. Tell all your relatives

(in advance) that they should be there at this certain time.

(i.e. immediately following the ceremony.) Create a

wedding day shooting schedule sheet, email it to your party days in advance, and pass it out again at your

reception. Leave contingency reserve for potential late comers (yes, you know who they are). Usually the flow

goes something like this. The bride and groom exit the isle (trailed by the photographer) followed by the

wedding party. The wedding guests are then dismissed and file out. Most of the time the bridal party goes to a

private room and waits for the guests to exit. Sometimes there is a receiving line as guests leave.

If you’re planning to do the formals at the same location as the ceremony, when the guests are mostly

dispersed, everyone that is supposed to be in the formals heads over to where the formals are being taken.

It’s during this time that a lot of couples run into problems. People have run to the car or the bathroom or to

make a phone call and the clock is ticking on your allotted time for pictures. This is why it’s so important to

make sure that each and every person knows that pictures are at X time on the dot or immediately following

the ceremony etc. and that they shouldn’t wander off. This of course also applies for doing the formals before the ceremony too.

Allow Enough Time:

Plan enough time for your formals. Even if your wedding photographer is amazing they

won't be able to give you wonderful photos in just five minutes. Like I said above we have seen many brides

and grooms have to cut this portion of the day (and their “bride and groom” photos following the formals)

short because they didn’t schedule enough time to get to them all done and get to the reception. If you are

planning to travel to another location to take the formals make sure you plan in the extra time it will take for

every one to get over there and then get to the reception.

Focus On The Big Picture:

Try not to make

photography of groups the main focus of your

wedding day. A few group photos are great to

record the friends and relatives at the

wedding. But at the end of the day, a wedding

album full of group photos probably isn’t

something you’re going to cherish for years to

come. When it comes to formals you are for the most part going to want pictures of the two of you!

Those are the pictures you will frame, hang up and share for years and years to come.

Dont let the pressure get to you:

This sort of elaborates on what I previously mentioned. Do not let your friends, family, wedding planner or even your self pressure you to hurry along your pictures because you feel you need to get to your reception. Years from now its not really going to matter that your guests had to wait a little longer BUT it will matter that you dont have couples pictures and good ones! Think about it...and plan to keep that attitude the day of.

I was in pure heaven on this shoot and Im so glad that my assistant photographer in training Monykah was there to snap some pictures of this amazing couple in a truly one of a kind location!! So I realized that I have been telling my brides something over and over lately but forgot to mention it on here! So Im taking the time to do it now : ) Details add so much to a picture!! Whether its your engagement, bridal, wedding day or even boudoir! Research different photographs you like. See what fun, romantic, colorful, vintage etc props they bring along and use in there pictures. After all..you dont want the same old pictures everyone else is doing do you? Make it different! Make it your own!

Examples:
- "I DO" on the bottom of your wedding shoes
-Signs for all the wedding party or guests to hold for 1 big group shot from above!
-Balloons in bright colors (for engagement)
-Unique bouquets for bridal and boudoir shoots!

Well, after a very nice Christmas break the wedding season is getting fired back up! We had our first engagement shoot of the year downtown Nashville. The weather was cold but you would never know it from these pictures! A very brave bride sported an adorable strapless blue dress! We started on the bridge and ended at River Front. Very enjoyable couple with lots of chemistry!

So it had been a while since shooting at Moss Wright but I was quickly reminded how great this place is for engagement shoots! There is an old house, stone walls, big open fields and beautiful trees. For a summer shoot you could even go down and stand in the river for some awesome photo opts! Anywho.... this couple could not have been any more photogenic! The camera loves them! They brought along an old classic car for some pictures at the end and as all of you know we just love pictures with old cars! Check out some of there pics below...

So Michael and I met up with Megan and Jeremy this afternoon for an engagement shoot! (YES! It was pouring rain most of the day!) This has got to be another one of our favorite couples! Absolutely adorable together and Jeremy is a true gentleman! Megan's mom was there too and she had some awesome picture ideas. It was uber nasty weather but we still managed to get some great shots!! ** For those of you that know Michael and I you know what animal lovers we are. Well, this shoot took place on Jeremy's parents farm and while shooting we had some very special onlookers! I of course took a picture of a couple and Im including them in the sneaks! Really, FAB day and we cant wait to meet up with them again for the BIG DAY!

From the moment we met with this couple we couldnt wait to shoot there wedding. I know we say that alot but this one is a little different! Stacie and Michael are truly a one of a kind couple and SO much fun to be around. There wedding was a theme of black, red and white and had so many cute little details! From Stacie's skull painted finger nails to the paper flowers and everything in between. Did I mention the zombie masks!!?? **On a side note this couple attended our Halloween party this year and it just wouldnt have been the same without them! They even won our costume contest : )

We had so much fun shooting this couple! They wanted a variety of shots and Michael and I had too much fun getting them! We started downtown and ended up at a local park! They brought a few different outfit changes and honestly, I dont think I could pick which was my fav! Everything with this couple came through great on the cam and I cant wait to shoot there wedding! Lots of fun and we never had to tell them to smile because they were SO happy the entire time! Lots of fun!
